Federal. Coalition. Opposition to change the way GST is divided up.

March 16, 2013

Shadow Assistant Treasurer Senator Matthias Cormann told Sky News’ AM Agenda that, if elected, the coalition would move to change the funding formula.

‘Any changes shouldn’t leave any of the smaller states any worse off but by the same token we have got to make sure that GST sharing arrangements and the way that federal-state financial relations operate generally, do not provide a disincentive to growth in states like Western Australia.’

But Labor Senator Matt Thistlethwaite said that the coalition’s maths doesn’t add up.

‘Tony Abbott’s got himself into a big knot on this issue because he’s being going around to all the states saying that they’ll implement a different system, but he won’t say what it is,’ he told AM Agenda.

Senior government minister Craig Emerson said the independent Commonwealth Grants Commission’s latest assessment was a ‘great boost’ to Queensland.
